NEW CONTENT - HIT REFRESH!

Asana Of The Month
   The Portable Yoga Floor

Our monthly feature is called "Asana Of The Month".

An asana is a yoga posture (or pose) designed to "keep the body healthy and strong and in harmony with nature" - B.K.S. Iyengar

Each month we will use this page to showcase a specific yoga posture (asana).

We will include:

a diagram of the posture

a written description of how to achieve the posture

a general description of the benefits of the posture

We hope you enjoy this new monthly feature!

Namaste,

UTTHITA TRIKONASANA (TRIANGLE POSE)

1)   Spread the legs apart sideways about 3 feet

2)   Raise the arms sideways to a height level with your shoulders

3)   Rotate the palms until they face down, keeping the arms parallel to the floor

4)   Turn the right foot 90 degrees sideways to the right

5)   Turn the left foot slightly to the right

6)   Keep the left leg stretched from the inside, tightened at the knee

7)   Bend sideways to the right from the hip joint, keeping both sides of the trunk flat and parallel

8)   Extend the spine outwards in line with the leg, tucking the tailbone

9)   Bring the palm down to the ground (if possible), or to a block, or near the right ankle

10)  Keep your hips, shoulders and back of the head on the same plane

11)  Extend the neck out of the shoulders evenly

12)  Stretch the left arm upwards in line with the right shoulder, extend the trunk keeping the
       tailbone tucked in firmly

13)  Keep the back of the legs, back of the chest and hips in line

14)  Turn the head to look at the outstretched left hand

15)  Keep the right knee locked and facing towards the toes on the right foot

16)  Breathe deeply and evenly for 30 seconds to 1 minute

17)  Lift the palm off the ground, straighten out the torso and return to the upright position

18)  Repeat pose on the opposite side for balance

This pose tones the leg muscles and relieves stiffness in the legs and hips.  Other benefits include relief from backaches and neck sprains.  It also strengthens the ankles and helps develop the chest.
