Our new monthly feature is called "Asana Of The Month".

An asana is a yoga posture (or pose) designed to "keep the body healthy and strong and in harmony with nature" - B.K.S. Iyengar

Each month we will use this page to showcase a specific yoga posture (asana).

We will include:

a diagram of the posture

a written description of how to achieve the posture

a general description of the benefits of the posture

VIRABHADRASANA 1 (WARRIOR POSE 1)




1)  Turn your trunk to face your front leg

2)  Bend your front knee and stretch your back leg

3)  Keep your hips and shoulders facing front

4)  Keep your front knee over your heel

5)  Keep your front shin perpendicular

6)  Keep your tailbone tucked in firmly

7)  Tilt your head back as you extend your outstretched arms upward

8)  Lengthen your spine upwards towards your joined palms

9)  Open your chest

10)  Soften your shoulders and face

11)  Hold the pose for 20-30 seconds breathing normally

12)  Repeat pose on the opposite side for balance

This pose expands the chest and helps deep breathing.  It also relieves stiffness in the shoulders, neck and back.  Other benefits include toned ankles and knees, and reduced fat around the hips.
